Holding my own again. Winter is bad for that. I already know I won’t make it to the gym tomorrow. I’ll try to get there the other four days. Sometimes it is more important to help a family member than to stick with a daily routine. I did get good lunches at the store – veggie blends that steam in the bag. Seasoned, but not sauced. Whole bag is under 200 calories. My carbs and fruit come at breakfast (oatmeal and blueberries); veggies at lunch; protein and some type of veggie at dinner. That should help me start losing again if I can just stay away from the junk snacks.
Right now the weather is exhausting. A snow squall moved through and then came what we laughingly call the Polar Vortex. As I write this it is almost 1pm and 14 degrees outside without the wind. Factor in the wind, which is gusting at 50, and the “real feel” temperature is well below zero. Sky is clear, sun is out, air is dangerously cold. It makes me want to curl up on the sofa with hot chocolate and a good book. A few days ago – last weekend in fact – we had a day that topped 50 degrees. Some rollercoasters are fun. This is not one of those.
So glad I filled the bird feeders yesterday. It was cold, but not like today. Now the birds have something to support their metabolisms. I got a suet cake hung for the woodpeckers. Haven’t seen the squirrels today. They may be hiding from the wind. Our friendly neighborhood red-shouldered hawk did a fly-through earlier – not sure where it landed. Today I’ve seen starlings, cardinals, wrens, blue jays, goldfinches, chickadees, titmice, and of course my red-bellied woodpecker. Haven’t seen the downy lately.
My son has volunteered to shovel the driveway. The house should provide a windbreak, at least a little. And the snow is not very deep – just an inch or so, maybe two. It’s just that it is so cold nothing is melting. Even the street is still covered.
Olyvia, our ADD kitty, is having a great time watching the birds. Sleuthy, our laid back male cat, has taken over the shipping carton I got from Amazon the other day. It fits him well. The cold doesn’t bother them. They don’t go outside! LOL! I am SO ready for spring!
Until next week….
